Where The Jungle Swallowed Everything

Somewhere in Thailand, hidden from the tourist beaches and resort strips, a zoo was abandoned. No announcement. No plan. The gates rusted shut. The staff left. The signs faded into the walls.

The jungle moved in immediately. The tropical climate — the relentless heat, the monsoon rains, the humidity — accelerated everything. Within years, vines consumed the enclosures. Roots cracked the concrete. Trees grew through the rooftops.

But the animals were never moved. The crocodiles still drift in their murky pool. A tiger — once one of two — still paces alone in a crumbling cage.

The Tiger Who Does Not Sleep

He paces. Even now, he paces. When the zoo was open, you could set your watch by it — sunrise to sunset, that tiger walked the same path, back and forth, back and forth, until the concrete was worn smooth in a line. When the zoo closed and the staff left, we thought he would stop. Why pace when there is nothing to pace for? But he did not stop. Workers from the construction site nearby — they heard it at night. The steady sound of something heavy moving back and forth. Back and forth. Some of them went to look. They saw the eyes first. Moving. Steady. Mechanical. Like a machine that has forgotten how to stop. One worker told me: it is not an animal anymore. It is something that used to be an animal. Something that only remembers one thing — that it is trapped.

The Pool That Never Empties

My grandfather said there were twelve of them when the zoo first opened. Big ones. Brought up from the south. By the time the zoo closed, nobody knew how many were left — the records were gone, the staff were gone, everything was gone. But the pool was not empty. You could see the water moving. Not from the rain, not from the wind — the water moved from underneath. Sometimes at night, in the rainy season, people walking the road nearby see a green light coming from that direction. Not a torch. Not a phone. Something in the water, they say. Something that has been waiting in that dark water for so long it has started to glow.

The Gate That Opened Once

They say the gate was locked with three chains when the last staff member left. Three chains, three padlocks, keys thrown into the sea at Rawai Beach. But in 2021, someone driving past at 3am saw the gate standing open. Not broken open — open, as if someone with a key had unlocked all three chains and pushed it wide. They stopped their motorbike. They took a photograph. In the photograph, the gate is open. The chains are on the ground, intact, not cut, not broken. And in the darkness beyond the open gate, at the far end of the path, there is a shape. Large. Low to the ground. The photograph has been shared thousands of times. Nobody has explained the chains.

The Birds That Came Back

After the zoo closed, the birds escaped over a few years as the wire mesh failed. By 2018 the enclosures were empty. But since 2020, guests at the hotel 400 meters away have been reporting birds perching on their balconies at night — unusual birds, ones that should not be in Phuket, species that only exist in captivity. Zoo birds. They come at night, they sit and stare, and they leave before dawn. As if they are checking on something. As if they are waiting for something to reopen. A bird expert I know said it was impossible — those species cannot survive in the wild in Thailand. I showed him the photographs my guests had taken. He had no explanation. He just said: those birds should be dead.

The Last Day

I was seven years old the last day the zoo was open. I do not know it was the last day — nobody did. We were the last visitors, my family and I. My mother bought me a balloon at the entrance — yellow, in the shape of a giraffe. I remember the tiger most. He was pacing, as always, and I pressed my face against the bars to see him better. He stopped pacing and looked directly at me. Not at my parents. At me. His eyes were so orange they looked like fire. I felt something I did not understand then but understand now — he was trying to tell me something. Twenty years later I drove past the site. I stopped and looked through the fence. In the overgrowth near the old enclosure, caught on a dead branch, was a yellow balloon. Deflated, old, twenty years old. In the shape of a giraffe.
